Shmuel Yilma, founder and director of Forum Yerusalem, and Tsega Melaku, PhD, Chair of Keren Hanan Aynor, and other Ethiopian Israeli leaders with whom Friends of Ethiopian Jews have worked on numerous programs in Israel have initiated a humanitarian coalition in response to the tens of thousands of displaced persons in Tigray caused by the recent fighting there. Tigray, the province just north of Gondar province in Ethiopia, was home to Ethiopian Jews for thousands of years, and has long been the site of many historical links between Ethiopia and Israel. The suffering and desperation that the people of Tigray are now experiencing struck a cord with many Ethiopian Israeli leaders who themselves suffered and witnessed the death of loved ones caused by drought, famine and war in northern Ethiopia during the late twentieth century and throughout the difficult journey to Israel. Now, in safety and freedom in Israel, Ethiopian Jews are giving back by helping Tigrean Ethiopians in their hour of need. Water, food, seeds, and shelter are being provided by a coalition of half-a-dozen Israeli humanitarian organizations, such as IsraAid, CultivAid, Nala and others.
Please Help! They have a long way to go to reach their goal of $100,000 U.S.
