Ethiopian Jewish Pottery
Friends of Ethiopian Jews is fortunate to have available a limited number of scarce, hand-crafted traditional pottery made in Israel by an Ethiopian Handicrafts Workshop whose goal is to preserve the traditional Jewish culture, heritage and authenticity of Ethiopian Jewish crafts.
Now you can support Ethiopian Jews in Israel with a donation to Friends of Ethiopian Jews and receive a piece of traditional Ethiopian Jewish pottery, handmade in Israel, as our thanks to you.
Traditional Ethiopian Jewish pottery focused on utilitarian items such as jugs, pots and containers, but potters also developed sculptures and figurines that expressed daily life, Jewish symbolism, religious practices and hope for fertility. Friends of Ethiopian Jews is offering a variety of sizes and styles of this beautiful pottery as a gift with donations to Friends of Ethiopian Jews of $50 or more:
Donations of $50 or more: Small figurine of frogs (put under your bed to increase fertility), birds (also fertility, life and food) and female fertility figures. Some are terracotta; some are burnished black-fired. All are exquisitely made and are 2-4” high.
Donations of $100 or more: Medium-sized (6-8” tall) figures depicting daily life and Jewish symbols. This group includes the best known example of Ethiopian Jewish pottery – the Lion of Judah. Female figures are holding babies, grinding grain and male figures are davening or holding the Torah. Selections are both terracotta-colored and black
Donations of $250 or more: Very large (10-12” tall) and intricate figures, often multiple figures intertwined. Mothers and children, families, families with animals, often with finely depicted hairstyles and expressions – all are outstanding works of art. Most are black-fired; a very few are terracotta.
